If there’s one thing Samsung loves to do, it’s give consumers plenty of screen sizes to choose from. Now, in addition to 7, 8, 9, and 10-inch tablets and phones up to a whopping 5.3 inches, Samsung offers the Galaxy Pocket — which features a tiny, 2.8-inch screen. That’s it up above, roughly to scale next to the Galaxy Note.
The Galaxy Pocket is clearly aimed at emerging markets or cell phone shoppers that wouldn’t normally consider a smartphone. Its specs include a very modest 832MHz processor, 3GB of user-accessible internal storage and microSD expansion, and a diminutive 1200mAh battery. The 2.8 inch display offers only a 240 x 320 resolution, the same you’d get on a three-year-old BlackBerry Curve. But at least the Galaxy Pocket utilizes a touchscreen.
Samsung’s suite of preinstalled Android standards are included, from TouchWiz to ChatON. You’ll also get integrated 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0 support, as well as HSDPA connectivity. As you’d expect, the Galaxy Pocket will fit in even the smallest pair of jeans. It’s just 10cm by 6cm and weighs only 97 grams.
The Galaxy Pocket is set to arrive in the UK some time later this year, but Samsung has yet to reveal carrier or pricing information. They’re also mum on where else you’ll see this little number wind up. One thing’s for sure — Samsung won’t be the only company outing yet another Android model aimed at people who might otherwise purchase a feature phone, and that’s going to continue to boost the Android browser’s lead over Opera and Safari.
